Recently Asked Questions I'm not in a union. Can I join USLAW? USLAW is composed of many kinds of organizations, including but not limited to unions. USLAW also has an associate membership for individuals, whether they are in a union or not. You can join USLAW as an associate member on this website by going to Associate Member Application or click on the Support USLAW button above, then on Become a Member. Would you consider yourselves a democraticly run, member based organization? U.S. Labor Against the War is the product of two delegated meetings of labor organizations, one in January of 2003 founded the organization as an emergency response to the threat of war. The second, in October, established USLAW as a permanent organization. That Labor Assembly for Peace adopted a leadership structure which includes a Leadership Council composed of one representative of every affiliated organization. The Steering Committee is constituted on the basis of the various constituency groups, including national labor organizations, regional labor bodies, large and small local unions, allied labor groups, labor antiwar committees, and non-union labor organizations (like worker centers).
Every effort has been made to see that all the important constituencies constituting USLAW are represented. The Steering Committee meets by conference call monthly and frequently polls its members and the Leadership Council on important issues and policy decisions.
We think this is a democratic and representative structure. My union is affiliated with USLAW. Why should I also join as an associate member? While the lion's share of financial support for USLAW comes from its affiliated unions and other labor organizations, individual associate members also provide important support to the organizations. Joining as an associate member affirms your support for USLAW. It also places you on our membership contact list for priority communications. How can I order USLAW buttons? Order on this website at Order Form

A sample and more information is available on our Home page. I was recently at the SEIU International Convention in San Francisco. USLAW had an evening session there was a gentleman there that said he had the website to go to learn when the draft was going to be started again and how the legislation was not put out anywhere but the internet. Your facilitators said you would have that website on your website.
I would really like to know about it since I have two sons between 18 and 26 that don't need to go to such a war. I want the information to alert them.
Sincerely,
Mark Gronso

I'm looking for a Union printer to do a small run of 12" square WORLD SAYS NO TO BUSH window signs. I'm funding this initiative independently so if there is a shop that would be willing to donate the printing that would be even better (I will credit at the shop on the bottom of the sign). I'm working on the infrastructure to get these signs up in storefronts all over NYC. And there is an Associated Press reporter chomping at the bit to write a wire story about the project once the signs are up...
The sign will be the same as the front page graphic at www.notobush.com

Progressive union printers are deluged with requests from movement organizations for donated printing. They cannot accommodate most of them as they do have to pay their employees. You should contact your central labor council for referral to union printers in your community. I'm going to try to get my local to join. Members are very "frugal." Are dues set or can locals join and give what they are willing to pay? If dues are set, what are they?
Thanks. USLAW has a recommended level of affiliation fee which differs depending on the kind of organization and its number of members. You will find this schedule at the bottom of the affiliation form in the affiliation packed which can be down loaded by clicking on "About USLAW" in the menu at the top of the page, then on USLAW Documents, then scroll down to the Affiliation Packet link.
The schedule is a recommended level of support. Obviously, each affiliate must determine what is possible consistent with their resources. USLAW depends on affiliation fees to be able to operate. We encourage affiliates to contribute as much as is possible, but recognize there may be circumstances where a local union is in financial difficulty and will pay less than the recommended level. A staff member will gladly work with the leadership to find a solution that works for both the union and USLAW. We can suggest alternative ways of raising the funds without relying entirely on the union treasury. Contact us for help and advice by writing to info@uslaboragainstwar.org Dear Fellow Peacemaker: I am a peace activist and member of PCUSA working on getting support to stage an annual event in D.C. and other venues to speak out and take action against all forms of violence and war. This event and ensuing political activity will take place regardless of whether our country is at war. The idea is that we, as peace makers, must be visible and work more closely together toward peace and justice as a "way of life". Our objective will be to prevent wars, not just try to stop those that have already started! As you know, most peace activities take the form of protests of existing armed conflicts. Our effort, on the other hand, will be guided by both short and long term objectives designed to replace or change violent structures that support violence as our country's preferred option of conflict resolution. Our approach will include political action and lobbying efforts to address those cultural, societal and political systems that must be changed or eliminated to transform us from the most violent nation on earth to the most peaceful. To make real inroads our movement will move away from complaining about "the system", to actually doing something about it! Will you join me and others in supporting this event and help pursue a promising new approach to peacemaking? Please reply by email or you may call me to discuss. Thanks for reading my message. I look forward to hearing from you! Howard BoydOcean View, Delaware(302-356-1547 Thank you for your query. USLAW affiliates share your desire to prevent wars as well as to end those under way. You should begin by working within your own union or other labor organization to raise your concerns and propose activities that address them. If your organization is not yet affiliated with USLAW, we urge you to work toward that end. Once affiliated, it can propose activities to our network for consideration. |
