Whereas Local 169
UNITE HERE represents working families in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut
who are facing economic domestic challenges including but not limited to
rapidly increasing costs of health care and education, declining real wages,
attacks on Social Security and pension benefits; and
Whereas the on‑going
war in Iraq has become a false pretext for attacks on the labor rights, civil
rights, human rights and immigrant rights for working families at home; and
Whereas the
escalating cost of the on-going war in Iraq (now over $70 billion per month)
has diverted national attention from the economic challenges faced by these
working families; and
Whereas
the cost in lives has been disproportionately borne by working families and
many working class military personnel are not provided
adequate medical and verteran’s assistance upon their return from their
deployments overseas; and
Whereas this cost in
dollars and in lives is unacceptable to working families;
Therefore be it
resolved that:
1. Local A69 UNITE
HERE supports our troops and their working class families by calling for the
quick and responsible end of the occupation of Iraq, and supports the efforts
of the U.S. Congress to advance a timetable of withdrawal to achieve this goal.
2. local 169 UNITE
HERE calls on the U.S. Congress to prioritize the economic challenges of
working people by funding health care, schools, housing, infrastructure and
Social Security and veteran's benefits rather than the failed occupation of
Iraq.
3.
Local 169 UNITE HERE endorses the October 27, 2007 March to end the war in
Iraq; and
4. Local 169 UNITE
HERE affiliates with the national US Labor Against War coalition.
Adopted by the Local
169 UNITE HERE Executive Council in New York, NY an 10/13/2007. |
